Sport for Development Strives for Sustainability

On 3rd to 4th June 2010, the 3rd Commonwealth Sports Development Conference was held in Glasgow, Scotland under the theme Achieving Sustainable Development, Building Capacity in Communities, Clubs, and NGOs.

The Conference was attended by funding organizations, researchers, practitioners, corporate institutions, Olympic and paralympic committees, sports federations and government departments.

The Kicking AIDS Out Network representatives were: NOWSPAR Executive Director Ms. Matilda K. Mwaba, Sport In Action Director Frankson Mushindu, SCORE Zambia National Manager, Zacharia Malasha, Sport and Recreaction Commission (Zimbabwe), Director sport Development  ,Joseph Muchetetere, Kicking AIDS Out Secretariat, Training and Development Officer, James.G.N.Nange, Sepreme Council for sports in Africa Zone VI,(SCSA Zone VI) General Manager Charles Rangarirai Dzimba and SCSA Zone VI Project Officer Hikabwa Chipanga.  

The conference provided information and sharing on a diversity of sport issues including the legacy of mega sports events such as Olympic and Commonwealth games, sustainability of sports programmes and effectiveness of sport for social change approach.

Discussions were in form of panels, thematic groups and presentations as well as poster exhibitions.

They benefited by learning about:

- The use of entrepreneurship and business to finance sport for development programmes

- The need to provide research based evidence of the efficacy of sport for social change

- The use of volunteer based development and organizations in sport for development

- Obtained resource material on monitoring and evaluation for sport for development programmes

- Shared their work and experiences in the field of Sport and advocacy organization in sport.

- NOWSPAR Shared their poster presentation hand out on role models in sport- presentation at the 5th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport.
