A turning point

10/21/2010
John Ngugi
My life turned three hundred and sixty degrees after the completion of the Leader Level 2 course
It has been a long journey for my experiential learning since I joined MYSA HIV prevention program. In 2003 I underwent my first training as Kicking AIDS Out peer leader in Kenya in a place known as Laikipia. Since then, I have been persistently implementing Kicking AIDS Out activities in my organization as a peer leader which gave me an opportunity to be trained as Leader Level 1 in 2008. My continued dedication towards the program activities enhanced my skills as a Leader Level 1, where I shared my experiences with the peer leaders by supporting and mentoring them.

In June, 2010, I was delighted to hear that I am among the selected participants to attend the Kicking AIDS Out Leader Level 2 training in Moshi, Tanzania. The training presented to me a golden opportunity to learn from experienced trainers from different parts of the continent ranging from far as South Africa, Rwanda and Kenya and fellow participants from the entire East African Community.

The facilitators transformed me from an ordinary facilitator to a developmental facilitator through participatory and interactive methodologies and creativity. I was particularly inspired and wish to emulate the mentorship by the lead facilitator, Mr. Bheki from CDRA who offered the dual shadow facilitators Edwin from MYSA and Paul from CHRISC total support by giving them an opportunity to facilitate sessions. This mentorship brought out the essence of learning by doing rather than learning by seeing as they are preparing to take-up the master trainer responsibility.

I was privileged to share with my colleagues my past experience that was personal and found my friends’ being good listeners and offered unconditional positive regard that facilitated the process .This was during the Turning point exercise that we underwent. I felt relieved from my issues especially challenges that was beneficial which made my life turned to three hundred and sixty degrees.

I am delighted that Kicking AIDS Out network is now planning to decentralize its activities in regions as this will create an opportunity for more leaders to be trained as Leader Level 2’s regionally and nationally.

As LL2, I now feel competent to mentor Leader Level 1’s ,conduct trainings through participatory and interactive developmental facilitation  and support HIV &AIDS project  in MYSA and beyond.

When I look at the future of Kicking AIDS Out in East Africa, It is too bright that it burns my eyes.
