For the first time, CHRISC Uganda held a 2 day Sports Management Course held in Ndejje district on 30th and 31st January 2010 with an aim of enhancing sports management and performance in the Districts. This course attracted 44 participants from 10 youth groups which were derived from Ndejje in Luweera District central Uganda. Different sports skills were taught including league management such as drawing and managing league tables and fixtures. It started with sports drills on day one and ended with Kicking AIDS Out games on day two.
This youth come from the following youth groups: CHRISC Ndejje Local group, CHRISC Kakute local group, CHRISC Mulira Local Group, CHRISC Bombo Local Group, CHRISC Waluleeta Local Group, CHRISC Namyeso Local Group, CHRISC Kikoko Local Group, CHRISC Kalasa Local Group, CHRISC Bbaale Local Group and CHRISC Nakikonge. All these groups sent 2 participants in the training and the remaining 4 people came from schools that partner with CHRISC Ndejje. CHRISC Uganda operates in 7 Districts namely; Arua, Mbale, Kisoro, Kibale, Masaka, Kampala and Ndejje that make up CHRISC Uganda.
Among the participants that turned up for the training was 8 years old Birabwa Sarah from CHRISC Nakikonge, one of the Local youth group that makes up CHRISC Ndejje. Sarah is an orphan girl in grade 3 in a local primary school. She was left under the care of her maternal grandmother after her parents died of HIV/AIDS in 2004. She has been living with her grand mother since then until last year in June when her grand mother got an accident and passed away. She then moved to her uncle’s place to live with him. The situation at home changed worsening day and night. His uncle who is a bachelor and drunkard began beating her and treating her like a slave. In order for her to dodge such persecutions, she at times escaped and slept outside in the nearby bush, this became rampant and eventually attracted neighbors to intervene in her case and good enough one of them came to her rescue and started staying with her.
As a Kiganda proverb says “if you want to reach fast, walk alone but if you want to reach far, walk together”. This has been her motto; she cooperates well with people above her and participates in almost every sporting activity CHRISC Ndejje organizes. Being young and an orphan does not stop her from learning a variety of things and in her words say; “If given an opportunity, I want to become a Peer Educator and fight against stigma”, She has been so much isolated both at the village and school, Pupils always call her “Omulambo Ogutambula” meaning, a living dead. Her self esteem has been built and has a passion towards transformation of other members. She is a prefect in her class and a member of “Straight Talk” HIV/AIDS Club. Without any doubt this girl will fulfill her dream,
She is so influential in her local group particularly in her age mates. Sarah believes that one day she will become a very successful leader, a role model and perhaps a Kicking Aids Out Peer Educator.
“Let no body despise you because you are young, but be a role model for believing in the world and act in love, faithfulness and purity” She believes.
