This year in addition to the event in Lusaka, sports festivals were held in the three other NOWSPAR chapters in Chisekesi in the Southern Province, Chipata in Eastern Province and Serenje in Central Province.
The festivals had a total participation of about 1,500 women and girls from various communities and age groups.
The sports festival drew its participation from national sports associations, community based sports initiatives, religious groups, corporate sector and the defence services.
Speaking at the sports festival the Minister of Sport urged the women in sport to mobilise themselves to promote sport and to use all available infrastructure and channels to advance the access and participation of women in sport.
The Minister presented twenty netballs and footballs on behalf of the Ministry of Sport for NOWSPAR to distribute to its chapters.
NOWSPAR Chairperson Ms. Mutinta Mwembe said it will be beneficial to the goals of women in sport if the Ministry of Sport would develop gender segregated budgets that allocate resources specifically to women in sport programmes. His Royal Highnesses Chief Chibale and Chief Lifwenuka of Serenje and Chisekesi respectively officiated the Women’s Sports Day events in their chiefdoms and encouraged their subjects to promote women and girls involvement in sport and recreation.
In Chipata, the football tournaments during the sports day were officiated by two young women who are training as referees. "We are happy that women and girls are increasingly appreciating the benefits of sport and have more interest in participating" said Mr. Raphael Mulenga the provincial Sports Development Coordinator for Eastern Province who was the main coordinator for the event.
The commemoration also included awareness workshops, role plays, sensitisation walks, and radio and TV discussions on sport as a tool for empowerment of women. The radio and TV discussions were conducted in English and respective area local languages Lozi, Tonga and Bemba. Both community and national media were utilised.
Members of the Sports for Social Change and Kicking AIDS Out Networks in Zambia participated in the coordination of the sports day.
Other contributors to the event included Blue Financial services, Parmalat, Manzi, Indo Zambia Bank, Kalusha Foundation, National Sports Associations, Muvi TV, ZNBC TV, Radio 2 and Radio Phoenix.
