MYSA Peer Educators have come from far…

MYSA peer educators used to offer health talks to young people, Young people could call us”People of Aids”, and ran away, now...

Introduction of Kicking AIDS Out activities in MYSA

Then came a new dawn In MYSA,

A new dawn in 2003,

In 2003 MYSA trained the first bunch of Kicking AIDS Out Peer Leaders,

The Peer Leaders included both males and females,

The Peer Leaders went back to the zones,

In the Zones the young people were attracted,

They were attracted by the games,

The movement games was also accompanied by debrief,

The debrief focused mainly on life skills and was related to the sport skills from the movement game,

Now the young people no longer run way, they run closer to the peer leaders.

New trends in Kicking AIDS Out activities

Thy no longer run away especially now that the movement games are sports focused,

Sports focused because we have invented football drills,

Football drills like 4 vs. and 4, 5 vs. 5 variations,

The drills are either warm-up or warm down activities,

During the drills the peer leaders identify a freezing moment,

The freezing moment is usually a learning moment for the peer,

Then the game progress,

Not long before the debrief begins,

The debrief participatory discussion begins from the point of the learning moment,

The learning moment then is focused the personal life skills,

The life skills discussion is then taken a level higher to life issue,

The life issues focus on topical issues like HIV and AIDS, STIs and reproductive health.

Uniqueness of Kicking AIDS Out activities

Kicking AIDS Out activities are like a Chameleon,

Like a chameleon because is a mysterious animal,

Mysterious because they can be used among different people,

Different people like the old, young as well as people with disability,

People with disability too because the too have a right to play like any other human,

Like any other human, children too are entitled to play.

Kicking AIDS Out Rational

Kicking AIDS Out are fundamental activities,

Fundamental activities because children learn better as they play,

Their play is part of the International Convention of Rights of the Child,

The right of the child also includes the right to quality education,

The right to educating also includes sexual reproductive health and rights education too,

The sexual reproductive health and rights entitles an young people the right to access Sexual reproductive Health medical service,

Young people are entitled to quality youth friendly sexual reproductive health medical services.

Conclusion

The KAO activities have transformed from traditional children games to the current sports focused movement games like football drills. The discussions have also transformed from the traditional link from sports skill to life skills to the current trend on sports skills to learning moment to life skills to life issues. The KAO activities ought to focus on games that focus on girls, women, the old, and persons with disability.
