Snapshots from LL1 training in Harare

Kizito Chileshe, Raymond Vries ed. Linda Torége

The Kicking AIDS Out Network, on request from the Sport and Recreation Commission of Zimbabwe, conducted a Kicking Aids Out Leader Level 1 workshop from the 26 to the 30 November 2008 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The 28 participants comprised Provincial Sports Coordinators and volunteers drawn from the 10 Provinces of Zimbabwe, where the Sport and Recreation Commission runs its programs with 10 coordinators and volunteers under the Youth Empowerment through Sport (YES).

The two facilitators that were selected to conduct the course from the secretariat was

Raymond Vries – SCORE Namibia and Kizito Mukuka Chileshe – Sport In Action (SIA), Zambia they were supported by four co-facilitators Angellah Nyaundi, Felistus Mashoko, Abigail, Annitah all from Sport and Recreation Commission, Zimbabwe

Participants were partly from the provincial coordinators and partly from the volunteers that work at community level with the Youth Empowerment through Sport (YES) program. The overall participation of the volunteers was very good and facilitators felt so welcome and experienced fantastic cooperation from both participants and the hosts.

Participants were highly involved at every stage as facilitators used the Action Learning Cycle to ensure active participation in the Learning process and a lot of energizers through out the course of the workshop. The approach was quite new much to the amusement of the participants.

The overall workshop was a great success especially that the participants were very vibrant and dynamic and made very relevant contributions during the learning process. Throughout the week the group was very much ‘FULLTICIPATING’

Among the challenges faced, was the preparation of material for the workshop in terms of stationery, and administrative facilities like printing and copying as well as access to internet facilities which were also very expensive $2 USD per minute. It was quite frustrating at times to find ourselves struggling with photocopies for handouts, flipchart papers, markers, etc. However, our co-facilitators from Zimbabwe tried their best to address these issues.
