Unforgettable Experience in Swaziland

4/16/2010
Phillip Kapena
After this Kicking AIDS Out training I have learnt a lot about HIV/AIDS and I think its right for me to review my status to you all because I have found a family

In the land of the Great King, I Visited Leaders in Training (LIT) to facilitate a leader level 1 course. The training was held for 5 Days for community members and volunteers. There were 20 participants, 10 females and 10 males.

The workshop began with the recap of what a Peer leader is and the Peer leaders role and responsibilities. The leaders had a chance to learn how sport can be used to explain, give and help youths about life skills and health related issues as well as wellbeing. It was shocking for me to hear about the myths and attitudes that are common in Swaziland to the spread of HIV/AIDS in the communities. The counselor who attended the workshop facilitated the topic "Living with HIV", she explained in Swazi language which I did not understand, as I am from Zambia, but the participants enjoyed and understood her, they were participating fully. Ice breakers and energizers were done throughout the course to keep the participants alert. The participants were attentive and learned new games and songs. The level of knowledge and understanding differed among the group, and facilitators tried to keep the information simple and clear so everyone would understand.

After the expectations and HIV questions were re-visited at the end and it showed the level of knowledge had increased. One of the participants that was more active during the training ended it all with sadness by reviewing her HIV status. She said: “How do I look to you? Have I changed? Well I’m HIV positive and I have been positive since 2007. When I was not feeling well in 2007 I went to the doctor and he told me to go for a test. I went only to find myself positive. How I got it I don’t know. I have been keeping it to myself and my two children know, I’m on ARVs. After this Kicking AIDS Out training I have learnt a lot about HIV/AIDS and I think its right for me to review my status to you all because I have found a family, thanks Kapena and Wandile for your facilitation and thanks to you all” Tears falling on her chicks.
