Introduction:
The Caribbean Healthy Lifestyle Project was established in 2000 to increase the involvement of Caribbean girls and women in physical activity and to promote the value of healthy lifestyle choices. In late 2003, the programme expanded and took on a multi-sport, co-ed format, with emphasis on training the youth of the Caribbean to be more aware of their lifestyle choices, to improve their leadership skills, and to pass on their skills, knowledge and competencies on to their peers. One very important module of C-HLP is responsible Sexuality, hence on introduction of Kicking AIDS Out to the Caribbean in 2004, it was immediately agreed that this initiative would be accepted as the Responsible Sexuality Module of C-HLP. The project’s slogan is “Your Life, Your Health, Make it right,” emphasising social and personal responsibility in making healthy lifestyle decisions.
Vision/Mission:
Vision statement:
To increase the awareness of the youth of the Caribbean, to the benefits of maintaining a healthy mental, physical, emotional, social, sexual, and spiritual lifestyle; and to provide them with the necessary skills and competencies not only to achieve this, but also to transmit those skills and competencies to their peers.
Mission statement:
To use sport as a vehicle to develop and change the lives of Caribbean youth, by educating them in specific areas that are relevant to their success in modern society. It is intended that over a ten-year period, in order to make the project sustainable, a strong cadre of Youth Leaders and Mentors will be trained and certified to deliver the project material to youth of both genders, participating in all sports across the region.
How is the organization incorporating Kicking AIDS Out:
Kicking AIDS Out forms an integral part of C-HLP. It is used as the HIV/AIDS Education aspect of C-HLP. Great emphasis is placed on training our Youth Leaders to be Kicking AIDS Out Peer leaders, and our Mentors to be Leader Level 1s with a view to moving forward in the Kicking AIDS Out training Programme.
