Introduction:
EMIMA (a Swahili acronym for Education, Sport and Physical Activity) is a non-governmental organization that ‘empowers youth through sport’. Founded in 2001, EMIMA uses sport as a tool for development and youth engagement by conducting sport based activity programs that raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, gender equality, sexual health and other similar issues. EMIMA provides youth with that opportunity to take part in regional and national football, netball and volleyball leagues as well as to lead in the educative aspect of EMIMA programs. EMIMA further provides girls empowerment projects and education support for EMIMA players and peer leaders.
Vision/Mission:
A Tanzanian society in which all youths have the opportunity to enjoy taking part in sport and use that experience to enhance their life skills.
How is the organization incorporating Kicking AIDS Out:
EMIMA has a total of 8 centers in some of the poorest communities around Dar Es Salaam which provide the facilities and equipment to facilitate peer education training; as well as the venues for sport training and matches. EMIMA has a current base of peer leaders who conduct daily Kicking AIDS Out games and activities before football and netball practices at each of the 8 centers. These peer leaders are youth who have been or are EMIMA players or coaches involved with EMIMA sport teams. Furthermore EMIMA holds many large events in which peer leaders will conduct KAO activities throughout the event for the public and EMIMA participants. They will also conduct KAO activities before matches at national football leagues throughout the city.
