Introduction:
In Norway sport clubs were traditionally formed by friends, by fellow workers, and by people who found a mutual interest in one or more branches of sport. The clubs established sports federations to coordinate and develop their common sport. The federations together with the regional sport organisations formed the Norwegian Confederation of Sports in 1861. The Norwegian Olympic Committee was merged with NIF in 1996 and the Paralympic Committee in 2008. The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sport (NIF) is now the largest voluntary organisation in Norway. NIF is the umbrella organisation which organises all national sports associations in Norway.
Vision/Mission:
NIF shall endeavour to provide everyone with the opportunity to participate in sport on the basis of their own needs and wishes. The organisation shall create positive values for individuals and society, and thereby strengthening its position as mass movement and driving force in society. The work of the organisation shall be characterised by voluntary effort, democracy, loyalty and equality. All sporting activity shall be based on the fundamental values of enjoyment of sport, fellowship, health and honesty.
How is the organization incorporating Kicking AIDS Out:
In its development cooperation NIF supports projects on sport development run by partner organizations in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The focus is on maximising children and youths' access to and participation in quality sport, play, and physical activity without any form for discrimination.
In addition NIF supports and participates in the Kicking AIDS Out network. The Secretariat is hosted by the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) through a satellite office in Cape Town, South Africa.
Norwegian Sports Volunteers is another important part of NIF’s development cooperation, where NIF has been facilitating the exchange of volunteers with our partners in Southern Africa since 1997. The exchange goes in both directions, from Norway to partner organizations and from partner organizations to Norway. The aim is to promote the mutual exchange of knowledge, experiences and skills.
