Introduction:
The Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation is the Government’s agency for sport, coming under the Minister for Community Development. Established as a statutory body by Act of Parliament in 2006, it replaced the former PNG Sports Commission. The PNGSF has its headquarters in Port Moresby, the National Sports Institute in Goroka, and Regional Sports Development Officers covering the four Regions of the country.
Vision/Mission:
To lead and coordinate the delivery of quality sport and physical activity into the lives of all people in Papua New Guinea and to create opportunities for sporting excellence.
How is the organization incorporating Kicking AIDS Out:
The Kicking AIDS Out program is aimed at training up PNGSF sports development officers and community sports leaders, integrating KAO games, activities and peer group education methodologies across all PNGSF grass-roots sports programs.
The key target group is male and female children and youth in communities across PNG. The PNGSF has long experience of delivering training programs to grass-roots communities (Children’s “Pikinini” Sports, Youth Sports, Sport Ability, and Women in Sport programs) but the objective now is to integrate KAO activities into these programs. The Committee on HIV Prevention Through Sport (of which PNGSF is a member) was established in 2007 and is the key coordinating body between the sports community and the National AIDS Council and HIV organizations, and will also play a key role in regard to sport programs in support of HIV strategies.
