Sport in Action

Countries:
Zambia

Introduction:
SIA is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) whose aim is to improve people’s quality of life through sport and recreational activities. Founded in 1998 and registered on 17/05/1999 (registration number ORS/102/35/2082), SIA was the first Zambian sports NGO. Its membership comprises ex-sports men and women and administrators from varying careers and backgrounds. SIA has recognised the fact that sport has a special attraction to young people as it offers opportunities for fun-play and physical challenges. Organised sport therefore has the potential to attract young people in a way that no other means of communication can match. SIA takes advantage of this power of sport as a mobilising tool to reach underprivileged groups such as orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) including Mentally and physically challenged children and youth, the girl child and youth, in rural and urban areas.

Vision/Mission:
SIA aims to provide an “Active, healthy and better living for all.” Through the use of sport and recreation as a tool to improve the quality of children’s lives by providing a program that will bring about motivation, self-development, child protection and self-reliance through social and economic empowerment”.

How is the organization incorporating Kicking AIDS Out:
We use our experience to mobilise communities and schools to establish HIV and AIDS clubs to be run by children and youth with guidance from teachers and adults. Activities include drama, videos, role plays, fun and traditional games and drawing and painting. Children and youth are taken through a talent identification process in which all are given opportunities for leadership education. Particularly outstanding and interested children and youth are developed further through weekly leadership clinics and peer teaching experiences.
