The Concept

Kicking AIDS Out promotes the use of sport as a tool for development. Kicking AIDS Out uses sport as a way of bringing people together to participate in fun and educational games and activities while delivering knowledge and practical skills about how to live a positive and healthy life. Sport and physical activity are used to build awareness about HIV and AIDS while also encouraging peers to discuss issues affecting their lives and their communities. The concept goes beyond HIV and AIDS education and places a strong emphasis on facilitating the development of life skills in youth.

Kicking AIDS Out is an international network of organisations working together to use sport and physical activity as a means of raising awareness about HIV and AIDS and motivating positive behaviour change in youth. The Kicking AIDS Out network believes that sport and physical activity are effective ways of attracting youth while serving as creative mediums  to facilitate and share positive messages about HIV and AIDS and other critical health issues affecting youth.

Programmes implemented by member organizations integrate sport skills and life skills through movement games, role plays, drama and other cultural and recreational activities. Central to the success and sustainability of Kicking AIDS Out is the emphasis on capacity building. Kicking AIDS Out develops programs to train coaches, trainers, and leaders, building capacity at the individual, organizational and community level.

The Mission Statement of Kicking AIDS Out:

To empower youth to positively influence their lives and the lives of others, by actively enhancing life skills through sport.

In order to be part of the Kicking AIDS Out network, a member organisation must use sport and physical activity as the foundation for their development programming. Quality sport programs are offered by member organizations which are used as a vehicle to facilitate life skills and leadership education. Effective member organizations make use of the Kicking AIDS Out philosophy and approach to enhance and deepen the life skills development that is already inherent to participation in sport.

This is often achieved through the facilitation of intentional health and life skills learning objectives through movement games and sport activities that are then constructively debriefed in safe small group discussions about the various learning moments of a particular movement game, activity or workshop.

Kicking AIDS Out, as stated in its Mission Statement, is designed to offer creative sport and physically activity programs to children and youth with a strong focus on participation and learning. Through the concept, sport and play provide interesting and effective opportunities for active learning, life skills development and the deepening of their HIV and AIDS knowledge and understanding. It is not elite sport performance that is the goal of our work but rather the transformation of lives. In the network, this is achieved by facilitating opportunities for youth to become positive role models and an inspiration for other youth.

The current concept of Kicking AIDS Out is based on experiences from Southern African countries and is founded on the work from the field of sport and other important and related areas, through research, evaluation, practical experience, field work and feasibility studies. In order to make this concept and training material work in settings outside of Southern Africa, some changes to the curriculum and approach are necessary. Challenges around language, religion, and culture continue to be addressed in partnership with the secretariat but needs more examination.  Participating members in the Caribbean and Vietnam have begun the process of adapting the current curriculum to be relevant for their specific context in which they are offering sport for development programming.
