This year’s tournament, under theme of “Sisters in football women in leadership” brought together more than 91 teams and over 1,500 players in four different age categories
The 8th Edition of the ever emergent MYSA girl’s tournament kicked off at the Nairobi Technical Training Institute and other 10 selected fields starting from Good Friday (22nd April) to Easter Monday (25th April).
This year’s tournament, under theme of “Sisters in football women in leadership” brought together more than 91 teams and over 1,500 players in four different age categories Under12, Under14, Under16 and Over16. The participating teams come from different provinces in Kenya, which includes; Moving the goal post from Kilifi, Kirigiti from Kiambu, Karura United, Ndumeberi Girls from Kiambu, Matuu Memorial, Gikanga Secondary, Mbutali FC from Eastern and Trans Nzoia Youth Sports Association amongst other teams.
The girl’s tournament, which is now the prime girl’s tournament in Kenya, was born after MYSA originated a successful girl’s football project way back in 1992 as a way of involving girls in sports and community development activities.
Girls' football in the African social set up was quite alien since girls never used to play football in Kenya. Their parents weren't comfortable with this idea and the boys laughed it off as a daydream. They thought that the girls could not play at all. Some girls seemed interested and MYSA was determined to expose them to football. The girls also saw this as an opportunity to get fit.
In 1996 the MYSA’s Under 14 girls’ team was the first girls’ team from Africa to feature in the Norway Cup in Oslo, Norway which is the largest youth tournament in the world. The tournament motivated them and totally changed their views towards football and life in general, later more and more girls got involved in football.
This year Tournament was a perfect platform to share and discuss about women leadership and gender issues.
