Kicking AIDS Out Club turns Blue Mondays to a more active day at Anointed High School.

8/10/2011
Victor Omollo
Facilitators from MYSA are supporting the students technically and giving guidance to the Club trained leaders on how to effectively deliver the Kicking AIDS Out activities during monthly support visits.

Fifteen (15) students and one (1) teacher from Anointed High school who participated in the Kicking Aids out Peer leader course held at MYSA Community Centre are implementing Kicking AIDS Out activities in the school after the formation of the Kicking AIDS Out club. The activities are up and running every Monday from 4.30 -5.30 pm and every Friday from 4.00- 5.30pm.

The Kicking AIDS Out club in Anointed High school is one of the most active clubs in the school. The peer leaders are able to mobilize the students on their own and share the knowledge.

Every Monday, the club always organizes educative forums, debates, meetings amongst others while on Fridays the club always conducts sport drills in the field. The population number of the students in Anointed High school is 300 and for the last three months the club has been able to reach out to the entire school with information on HIV and AIDS, Healthy Relationships and Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs). The number of students participating during the Kicking AIDS Out activities has been overwhelming. The students are divided into two group; Form one’s (grade 8) are always grouped with form four’s (grade 12) in one class while form three’s (grade 11) and form two’s(grade 9) in another different class. Many students do consult with the peer leaders whenever they have questions. Sometimes peer leaders do request the students to write their questions on a piece of paper and collect them. These collected questions are always tackled at the beginning of a new session. Despite some of the challenges (i.e. Shyness and not co-operative students) that the club has experienced just after its formation, today I can say that the club has been very successful because it has been running its activities in the school smoothly.

Students have gained a lot of knowledge from the club which they didn’t have before. The facilitators from MYSA who conducted our peer leader training have also been supportive where they have been giving technical support and guidance to the club trained leaders on how to effectively deliver the Kicking AIDS Out activities during monthly support visits.
