SEDYEL is a youth-led sport and community development program. The Program was initiated to channel the energy and enthusiasm of young people away from the risky behavior using sports and physical activities. The championship marks the end of the SEDYEL decentralized football league that runs in the 5 villages of South East and will bring together winners from each village to battle it out in order to determine the overall district champion in three age categories (under 13, under 17 and under 25 for both boys and girls.
As March is designated by the Government of Botswana as the Month of Youth against HIV and AIDS, the championship will also mark the celebrations of this month with the key theme “My Youth, My Health, My Responsibility”. The event will present an ideal opportunity for the youth to develop their untapped talents, giving them a sporting chance and opportunities through sports. While the games are being played, a team of Peer Leaders will stand on the sidelines engaging the youth in a creative and stimulating Kicking AIDS Out games that integrates life skills and HIV/AIDS into physical activities.
Recently, SEDYEL registered a female football team that participates in the National Women’s Football League, the South East Girls United FC. After the event, should your schedule permit, we extend our invitation to join us to watch a National Women’s Football League game between the South East Girls United FC (SEGU) and Vicomates FC.
With the tag line; For the Youth, By the Youth, SEDYEL intends to use the power of sport as vehicle for youth and community development hence the championship will be a testimony of what young people can do for themselves and their community-inspired by sports.
