South East District Youth Empowerment League is proud to inform the Network Membership that it has officially been registered as a Non-governmental organisation and with immediate effect shall be called South East District Youth Empowerment Association (SEDYEA). SEDYEL has been operating under the umbrella of the South East District Council of Botswana through a partnership with the City of Toronto, Commonwealth Games Canada, UK Sport and Mathare Youth Sports Association since 2005. Other partners have come on board including Schools Without Boarders, Canada, GIZ previously GTZ and Street football World Network.
Since 2005, SEDYEA has grown to be the largest youth sports and community development organisation in Botswana with over 100 football teams for both boys and girls with a semi-professional women’s team playing in the Botswana Football Association women league.
Recently, SEDYEA were nominated as the next host of FIFA Football for Hope Centre.A successful assessment of SEDYEA’s programmes was done earlier this month where representatives from Football for Hope and Architecture for Humanity personnel visited Botswana.
The next steps will involve conducting a community mapping exercise and developing a strategic plan outline for the Centre, which should be in line with SEDYEA overall strategic plan. Kitso the Director of SEDYEA believes that the centre shall increase their visibility which may attract new partnerships and funding opportunities.
“I would like to thank our long term partners, the Local Government of Botswana, City of Toronto, CGC and UK Sports for believing in the potential of the young people of Botswana, even when there was nothing on the ground and the partners who joined on the way and made SEDYEA what it is today.Key to these development is MYSA accepting to support SEDYEA in the formative stages and using its model in the successful development of SEDYEA,not forgetting the support we have received from the Kicking AIDS Out! Secretariat” He stated. This project showcases the true meaning of partnership.
