The 3rd of May 2010 was a great day for Libuyu community in Livingstone, Zambia. They had a seven aside Tournament comprising of 6 boys and girls football teams aged between 10 and 12 years old with 10 players in each team. The event started with a procession with all participating teams and invited guests taking part.
The guest of honor was the Southern province Deputy minister Hon. Daniel Munkombwe. Among the guests were representatives from Ministry of sport, Southern Water Sewerage Company, GTZ, Youth Development through Football (YDF) South Africa and Community leaders.
Apart from football matches, drama and cultural dances were performed. At every point teams that were off the pitch went round the 5 health and hygiene stations where trained peer leaders were giving lessons on hygiene and on the other side of the pitch was a station for life skills activities through Kicking AIDS Out movement games.
After the final match which Super strikers lost to Dream team by a goal to nil, Trophies were awarded to winners; 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.
The tournament was fun and very educative in a way that the people of Libuyu including the players really learnt so much from the movement games on health and hygienic issues which they will take up and bring change to their communities.
On the eve of the tournament, peer leaders conducted door to door campaign in the community to sensitize on issues around health and hygiene. Some of the issues tackled were availability and maintenance of rubbish pit, toilets, washing hands after using toilets, clearing of stagnant water and chlorination of drinking water.
At the end of the event, EduSport received a gift from Rwanda in form of basket and a T - shirt who had the tournament few days earlier while EduSport again gave a wooden toilet and a homemade football to Namibia who is the next nation to host the event in the next few days. This is being organized in a number of countries where YDF is running activities.
