Modiri Pikashe from SEDYEL, reflecting on evidence in S4D

...as organizations, we must constantly engage ourselves with collection of information from the participants...

The trip to the United Kingdom has been an amazing one. Having been given the opportunity by Kicking AIDS Out! Secretariat to mingle and share best practices with practitioners, funders and academics in the sport for development has been the best one.

The importance of the symposium in Southampton, Solent University can not be overemphasized as it gave me the chance to hear and understand the importance of having information or evidence that can indeed show that sport can be used for development and can be used to tackle so many issues of concern like wars, conflicts and HIV/AIDS.

On our part as organizations, we must constantly engage ourselves with collection of information from the participants and any other person whose life has been positively changed for being part of sport for development organization. The current situation is that there is limited information which supports the sport for development movement. Therefore, this requires organizations to make monitoring and evaluation part of their everyday business and not to be regarded as merely a once off event. This will improve the level of information we have now in the movement to show the power of sports in development. Professor Tess Kay insight or presentation was a very powerful one as it encouraged organizations to move from their comfort zone and work towards change. Furthermore, Oscar Mwanga, as the founder of this movement, was very helpful in helping us understand the concept and we must constantly continue to improve it.

I hope to use the knowledge gathered to improve my work at SEDYEL and share it with other youth. My hope is that this kind of meetings will continue to give others the opportunity to share and learn what I have gone through. After all, sport is the winner.
