My involvement and being part of the Kicking Aids Out! Family goes as far back as 2006 when I joined Sport In Action as a Peer Leader. I must mention that it is one programme I never understood more especially when trainers from our office travelled a lot to conduct workshops in different places. From 2007, my understanding of the network was being comprehensive and I started applying the concepts even before undergoing training as Kicking Aids Out peer Leader, From that time I developed enough interest, the programme was growing due to the fact that the kicking aids out programme was to be incorporated in my daily sports activities.
I was trained as peer leader and Leader level 1 in 2008 and 2009. It was in that year when I was short-listed as those to attend the Leader Level 2 training in South Africa, unfortunately I was not picked, I buried that unsuccessful opportunity and continued implementing the Kicking Aids Out activities which included placement sports activities as well as well workshops.
My turning point came in 2010; I was picked to attend an Induction in the United Kingdom, where my role was to orient Students from six universities under the ideals project (Uksport) on how to integrate development and the fight against Aids through the use of sport as a vehicle. The same year I was trained as a Leader Level 2 in Livingstone, southern province of Zambia.
From the time of my training I have challenged myself in enhancing the implementation of sports for development programmes. Am proud to mention that I am one of the leader level 2s spearheading the Kicking Aids Out programmes at Sport In Action. Being a Leader Level 2 has taught me a lot of things that I consider as important, these range from leadership, coordination to mention a few.
I was privileged to be one of the Kicking Aids Out leaders in Zambia to co-facilitate a peer leader workshop 2010 Youth Sport Exchange Programme YSEP, this is the first time that the Kicking Aids Out concept in the general orientation was being conducted.
In 2011, I applied for internship programme for Zambia. I was appointed for a three (3) month period. The major tasks under my internship will be to coordinate the 10 years of Kicking Aids Out! Anniversary celebrations for Zambia, writing articles for posting on the network website,
- Liaise with the 10th Anniversary Working Group, Zambian Membership and the Kicking AIDS Out! Network Secretariat on matters related to the 10th Anniversary celebration.
- Liaise with the Kicking AIDS Out! Network Secretariat and Zambian Membership on matters related to Kicking AIDS Out! Network.
- Prepare monthly updates in-form of articles to be posted on the Kicking AIDS Out! Network and Zambian Membership websites. This shall be used to generate interest to the build-up of the event.
- Facilitate effective networking, communication and information sharing among the working group and the Zambian Membership
The levels of expectation is high among the Zambia network members as the 10 years celebrations will be a reflection on the impact of sports and life skills. This is a great opportunity, as it will enable me improve on my administrative and coordination capabilities, and also to understand more about the networks programmes and its members around the world.
In the three months of my internship I aim at building a stronger partnership among the Zambia membership to that which exists, the other things, which I feel is important, will be, to set a foundation for future interns that will be appointed to facilitate the network’s programmes.
I would encourage my fellow youths and leaders in sports to be focused and challenge themselves to being change agents in their respective organisations, at the network level and countries at large.
My journey as LL2 still continues, my aim is to be one of the Master Trainers for Kicking Aids Out! Network.
